شطرنج یک بازی دونفره است که بر روی صفحه شطرنج و با استفاده از مهره‌های شطرنج (شاه، وزیر، رخ، فیل، اسب و سرباز) انجام می‌شود. هر یک از مهره‌های شطرنج به شکل مخصوصی حرکت می‌کنند و قادر به زدن مهره‌های حریف نیز هستند. هدف این بازی مات کردنِ حریف است؛ یعنی ایجاد وضعیتی که شاه حریف هیچ راهی برای فرار نداشته‌باشد. همچنین بازی درصورت تسلیم اختیاریِ یکی از بازیکنان نیز به پایان می‌رسد؛ این اتفاق معمولاً وقتی می‌افتد که شکست اجتناب‌ناپذیر به‌نظر برسد. بازی شطرنج همچنین در چندین حالت ممکن است با تساوی ختم شود. بازی شطرنج به سه بخشِ شروع بازی یا گشایش، وسط بازی و آخر بازی تقسیم می‌شود که در هر یک از این مراحل، تاکتیک‌ها و سبک‌های متفاوتی به‌کار بسته می‌شوند. مهره‌های شطرنج دارای ارزش متفاوتی هستند و برای ثبتِ حرکات، با نمادهای ویژه‌ای نوشته می‌شوند. شطرنج دارای تاکتیک‌هایی ازجمله چنگال و آچمز و دارای جنبش‌ها و حرکات ویژه‌ای مانند حرکت قلعه، آن‌پاسان و ترفیع پیاده است.

شطرنج رابطهٔ نزدیکی با ریاضیات و رایانه دارد. در سال ۱۹۹۷، دیپ بلو، ساختهٔ شرکت آی‌بی‌ام، توانست برای نخستین بار گری کاسپارف، قهرمان وقت شطرنج جهان، را شکست دهد. مسابقات شطرنج گاهی با محدودیت زمانی برگزار می‌شوند و عنوان شطرنجِ سریع و برق‌آسا برای مسابقاتی که زمان کوتاهی دارند استفاده می‌شود. در کنار شطرنج کلاسیک، انواع دیگری از این بازی، مانند شطرنج سیامی و شطرنج ۹۶۰ هم علاقه‌مندان زیادی دارند.

 

۱. ماهیت و اهداف بازی شطرنج

بازی شطرنج بین دو حریف انجام می‌شود که مهره‌های خود را به نوبت بر یک صفحهٔ مربع به نام صفحهٔ شطرنج حرکت می‌دهند. بازیکن دارای مهره‌های سفید بازی را شروع می‌کند. نوبت حرکت بازیکن زمانی است که حرکت حریف او انجام شده‌باشد. هدف هر بازیکن قراردادن شاه حریف در معرض حمله است به نحوی که حریف در حرکت قانونی بعد به هیچ امکان نتواند شاه خودش را از معرض حمله خارج کند. بازیکنی که موفق به این امر شده‌است به اصطلاح حریف را «کیش و مات» کرده‌است و بازی را برده است. اگر بازی به شرایطی برسد که هیچ‌یک از دو بازیکن نتواند «کیش و مات» کند، بازی مساوی است.
